Mike Jones A beautiful collection of songs. Raw but also intricate. Kraftwerk-esque vocoded vocals and hints of early Robert Rental, OMD and others, but still fiercely original. Love it!!

eddiecarter1976 So glad that Steve got in touch for my radio show, because I got to play tracks from this little beauty. A fantastic mix of Post Rock and synth, moody and enthralling. Favorite track: Coral Pink and Candy Coloured Sky.

about

"The album offers a plethora of squelchy synth basslines and synth-strings floating about just behind the vocals. Hints of Depeche Mode, The Beloved, Kraftwerk, Four Tet, John Foxx and even Everything Everything raise their heads here and there....a very good album’s worth of original, entrancing material." Trust the Doc Blog Edition 59 August 2021.

"...it’s a great example of minimal wave/post punk in the 2020’s as we’ve become separated from the lives we once knew, only to find ourselves rebirthed in a new reality in which we’re searching for answers." Desert Planet Music, August 2021.

Selected for the "Eclectic Picks" on Fresh on the Net 9 July 2021.

"It's an absolute corker. A really substantially good record". X Minus One Radio Show, 13 June 2021.

“It’s a cracking album”. The Home Brew Electronica Show 17 June 2021.

"It's the quirky majesty that is Negative Response...we've got the whole album and we are gonna play it!" WA12 Radio 29 June 2021

The "Submersion Therapy" collection of 9 songs are the first original tracks from Negative Response since 1983. This collection uses many of the methods used in previous recordings, mainly second hand recording equipment and synths. This album has been made using a Boss BR8 zip file 8 track recorder. This is very much a DIY affair with covers, inserts and labels being home made.

Minimal synth based, Negative Response materialised in September 1980 from the ashes of short lived Croydon punk band, The Two an' Eights. Inspired by the DIY punk ethic, the project acquired some of the more affordable analogue electronic equipment that began to emerge in the early 80s, including a Roland Dr Rhythm drum machine, Wasp and a 4 track cassette machine to record its output on.

Negative Response released its début cassette album, a collection of self-penned tracks, "Is It True!" in August 1981 on the home-grown Negative Products label. This was followed in August 1982 by the 9 song, "One Day" cassette album which quickly sold over 100 copies worldwide. December I983 saw the release of a 3rd cassette album, "Shapes of Things to Come". In 2016 a copy of "One day" appeared for sale on an online auction site and sold for £216.

Negative Response appeared on several compilation cassettes during the first half of the 1980s. The most high-profile track was “Utopia” which appeared on Dorking label’s Underground Music Various Artists Volume 1 and also featured Anne Clark. Other Negative Response tracks appeared on cassette releases by underground fanzines “Instil the Beat” and “4 Minute Warning”.

Negative Response played a dozen gigs between 1982 and 1985. Live shows used backing tapes augmented with vocals, synths, melodica and percussion and a customised black and white slide projection show.
Fast forward to 2016 and Negative Response was approached by several labels to release this older material. This resulted in the issue of the limited-edition cassette “Ectopic Beat” and lathe cut vinyl “Reunion” from Barcelona based Manufactured Desire Records and the 300 issue vinyl “Oblique Angles” from Seattle’s Medical Records.

Negative Response began writing some new tracks and began to attend some of the London based electronic music open mic nights. This resulted in an early version of the track “’Til It’s Over” being included in Volume 2 of the You Might Not Like collection.

Negative Response has featured on Defsynths annual Halloween Masquerade collection by providing alternative electronic versions of "Fast Cars", "Identity" 2The In Crowd" and "In Heaven".

In 2020 Negative Response also appeared on the Pete Shelley songs covers album "Yesterday's Not Here" with "Fiction Romance" issued by Not Murdered Records, in aid of the Peter Shelley Memorial Campaign.
